17th century brings in the romantic tradition of the Claddagh Irish wedding ring. According to the legend, Richard Joyce, a goldsmith, of Galway village in Ireland loved a young lady was engaged to be married. He went to far off lands on business and was away from his beloved.

In West Indies he was taken a captive by the Moors and sold to an Algerian goldsmith. He practiced as a goldsmith and was released from slavery through diplomatic channels. Realizing the unique talents of Joyce, the Algerian goldsmith offered the hand of his daughter and a handsome dowry if he stayed back and worked with him.

“The course of true love does never run smooth” But Joyce, true to his love and commitment, sailed back to Galway and his betrothed declining the offer. Joyce married his fiancée whohad been awaiting his arrival all the while.

On their wedding day, the wedding ring he had enabled during the period of his separation from his beloved, was part of the wedding ceremony. It was the original Claddagh Irish wedding ring. Claddagh was once a small fishing village just beyond the parameters of Galway.

Meaning:

The Claddagh wedding ring is replete with rich symbolism. It is a band of precious metal containing a single heart providing the bridge between two hands over the heart lies the crown. Besides it has two interwoven strands that touch the distal ends of the hand and encircle the entire band.

The interwoven strands symbolize the inter-connected lives of the couple. The heart at the centre of the Claddagh Irish ring is a symbol of the love shared by the two while the crown represents timelessness.
